Lloret de Mar is a coastal
town in Catalonia on the Mediterranean near to Blanes and Tossa
de Mar and
about thirty miles from Barcelona. Lloret de Mar is the biggest resort in the
Costa Brava
There is a medieval fort on the outskirts of the town called Castell
de Sant Joan, Saint Joan's castle, Lloret was founded in 1001 AD. A bronze
sculpture overlooking the town is a Lloret trademark. It shows a
fisherman's wife Dona Marinera created in 1966 by Ernest Maragall.
The origins of Lloret de Mar can be traced back to the third century. Notwithstanding the development of luxury hotels, villas and apartments for bargain family package holidays, Lloret has managed to retain a good deal of local character. Narrow cobbled streets and quaint coffee bars and restaurants abound. The entertainment is outstanding with fiestas, street markets and fairs.
